First-tier Tribunal for Scotland (Health and Education Chamber)

A Scottish panel that settles disputes about a child's school support. Parents use it when the council refuses a support plan or gets one wrong.

The Health and Education Chamber is part of the First-tier Tribunal for Scotland and is independent of your council Local authority Your local council. In England, Wales and Scotland, this is the body you ask to assess what extra help your child needs. Read the full definition of Local authority . It hears disagreements under the additional support for learning Additional support needs The term used in Scotland when a child needs extra support to get the most from school. A disability counts, but so do things like bereavement or being a young carer. Read the full definition of Additional support needs law, such as a refusal to prepare a coordinated support plan, and claims that a school has discriminated against a disabled child. Until January 2018 this work was done by the Additional Support Needs Tribunals for Scotland, so guides and forums may still say ASN Tribunal. It cannot hear every disagreement: simply wanting more support than the council offers is usually dealt with through mediation or independent adjudication instead, so it is worth getting advice from Enquire first.
